The Four Men Brooch is drawn from
two half circle images in the Book of Kells. It combines many of the
hallmarks of Celtic anthropomorphic design, with both hair-pullers and
beard-pullers. There has been much
speculation about the monks using these designs as humorous diversions from the
serious business of copying the gospels.
The Four Men Celtic Brooch is a
