The Spiral Number Three
Celtic Brooch
The
spiral is the natural form of unfolding growth. In every culture past and
present it has become a symbol of eternal life. Surrounded by water as they
worked, the Celtic monks were reminded constantly of the flow and movement of
the cosmos. The whorls they painted represented the continuous creation and
dissolution of the world, the dark into light, winter into summer, the
contraction and expansion of the sun. This polarity also formed the basis of the
Celtic religion. Spirals unfold clockwise from the counterclockwise source and
represent the inner and outer evolution of the spirit. The four armed
spiral was representative of the seasons, the four directions (or airts) and the
elements.
