I glue a
paper pattern of the design to the silver or gold and drill tiny holes to thread
my saw blade through.

I then saw
out everything on my design that is black with a hand saw, using a very small
blade.

Once the
piece is completely pierced, it is hard soldered to a solid backing sheet of
silver or gold.

The detail
lines are hand engraved. I use a chemical solution that causes the
silver or gold to tarnish and turn black in the recessed areas.

Each piece
is hand finished through an eight step process.

(How
and Why I Create My Work)
I became
enchanted with illumination from medieval manuscripts at an early age.
I was fascinated by the beauty, imagination, and intricacy of these designs.
I developed a particular interest in Celtic manuscripts from Ireland and the
British Isles dating from about 500 AD to 1200 AD.
As artist, ancient
images and techniques fascinate me. Before the use of the written word
became widespread, images were the keepers and communicators of history,
tradition, and spirituality.
I find that
I most enjoy the older, more traditional processes and hand working the
metal. I studied Hopi and Zuni American Indian piercing techniques and
found that I loved the challenge of intricate piercing with a hand
saw.
In 1990, I began to contemplate combining my love of
illumination and piercing to create jewelry that had the feel of the
medieval manuscripts to which I am so drawn. I found that t I had to
teach myself to hand engrave to get the effect I saw in my mind’s eye.
Finally, in late
1991, I had acquired the skills to start on the work that I still love
to do today. I find inspiration from the old manuscripts, Celtic myths
and legends, and the natural world around me. I have developed a
special interest in working with figures and engraved fabric patterns on
their clothing. I hope to offer several pieces with intricately
engraved clothing in the future.
I strive to infuse
each piece with a spiritual power through the crafting process. My goal is
to bring beauty and mystery together in a way that intrigues and inspires.
Each
Wedding Ring and piece from The Heirloom Collection is stamped with the Studio Logo
"Zephyrus" and my personal mark, a seven pointed star. Each
is executed solely by the artist. No apprentice labor is used.
I am always
surprised, gratified, and grateful by how many of my customers call or email
to let me know how much they love their piece.
